I liked this book because the Manila of today bears remarkable similarity to 150 years ago. The issues, attitudes, and complexities of then vs now made me realize how people will be people. A cool history book on what it was like doing business back in the 1850's....a cool account of what a silver quarter could buy in those times!
An excellent pen portrait of life in the Philippines in the Victorian era by a very observant writer. Would put many modern histories to shame in its coverage based purely on the author's own observations. Fascinating.
