Joseph Gillan's Just before the Dawn (Rebecca Remembered) is, in many ways, designed to be an elegy for lost chances. In rich detail, Gillan describes a love affair between Rebecca and Thomas, which has been over for some time but which is brought back to Rebecca's attention by a lengthy letter from Thomas. This spells the beginning of the end of Rebecca's once-happy marriage to William. While chronicling this decline, Gillan also uses the titular refrain to show readers the relationship once shared between Rebecca and Thomas. He occupies both characters' perspectives, providing readers with a more well-rounded view of the story. While Rebecca is dealing with the end of her marriage, Thomas is dating a variety of women, none of whom satisfies him in the way that she did. And yet Thomas finds himself pining after another woman, Olivia. Using all of these relationships, Gillan masterfully establishes and reiterates the tensions of unrequited love in a way that draws readers in while simultaneously wrenching their hearts. Filled with reflections on the nature of faith, religion, and life itself, Just before the Dawn (Rebecca Remembered) is an intricately detailed, intelligently written text. Gillan is able to be intellectual, yet never pedantic, and his frequent citations of other writers may endear him to his readers. This is a novel that mulls over many basic questions of human existence; for this reason, it could have a wide appeal.

I enjoyed this fictional novel very much. The author went into a lot of detail....re sports, religion, education, sex, death and above all.......love. The conclusion will be a surprise to everyone. First time I read this author and look forward to more of his novels in the future.

Just Before the Dawn Joseph A Gillan 9780982017142 Books Reviews

I found Just Before The Dawn to be an intellectually written love story that captured my interest from the first page.It follows the life, troubles and loves of a very interesting man.I can't wait to see what Mr. Gillan has in store for us next.
This is the worst book I have ever read. It seems as if the author used this platform to espouse his own agendas without regard to the job at hand - to develop an engaging plot and characters that readers will care about. At the very least, he could review rules concerning the use of commas.
A lot of heart went into this book and is well written. The relationships which were developed in this book were well thought out and developed in a manner that engages the reader into wanting to know what finally happens by the end of the story. Not giving up any specific details but the spiritual aspect of a love/hate and love/friend relationship are used rather handsomely.
Gillan's novel begins with promise as Rebecca opens a letter from the main character and a former lover, Thomas. It is a 200-page letter that she has kept secret from her husband William, waiting for him to leave the house before stealing a few moments to read what Thomas has written. This immediately hooks the reader into the story.
Unfortunately, as the story continues, it becomes increasingly repetitious and bogged down in details. Some of the details included in the story are pertinent and enjoyable, but most of them become tedious to the reader. At points, the reader can actually skip several pages of text without missing the plot--in some cases, whole chapters can be skimmed.
Finally, the ending leaves something to be desired. Though Rebecca is a prominent character in the novel, the reader never finds out what becomes of her. All in all, the story fragments unpredictably and tends to meander aimlessly into topics that have nothing to do with the actual plot. A disappointing read for the average reader, but it may be enjoyed by those who enjoy extremely detailed narratives.

As far as first novels go, this wasn't a bad attempt. His storytelling was at its best when relating the tales of Ricky F and Rollie. You could see the main character's humanity and connected with him in those moments. However, the author could have used a good editor to provide a focus for the novel. It meandered all over the place, touching on a myriad of topics that were obviously near and dear to the author's heart, but didn't provide much towards a plot line. I'm still confused on several issues with the book what was the reason for bringing Rebecca into the novel - she didn't seem to serve any plot device, characters were introduced in droves and then abandoned, story lines started and not finished, and the novel in general didn't seem to have a purpose. As someone once told me, a good story needs to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. It doesn't hurt to have a plot conflict either.
The multitudinous use of lists was annoying a best, boring and detractive at worst. There's an entire chapter devoted to a list of the books the main character had read. Other superfluous details would have best been left out, unless pertaining specifically to the plot line. For example, chapter seven is about the round of golf where he meets Rebecca. The game itself or the course it is played on adds nothing to the story, but the author writes in detail about what golfer Greg Norman thought of the 9th hole and described it in great detail for three paragraphs. Expand that detail out to different subjects, and you get an idea of what the first fifteen or so chapters of the book are like.
I would like to see this author take one of the story ideas from this novel and expand it out on its own. He has a good writing style, but lacks flow.
on a scale of 1-10 our book club gave it a 0.
It's a self-published novel by an egocentric with no writing skills and unedited.
Loved this book ! It is very readable, enjoyable and full of rich, thoughtful scenes and interesting, colorful characters.
